We offer demolition in Merced, about 39 miles from our Riverbank base, measured in a straight line. Merced is the county seat of Merced County, in the San Joaquin Valley. About 92,000 people live here, and the city is known as the Gateway to Yosemite. The City of Merced Inspection Services Division, at 678 W. 18th Street, handles building permits. Since February 2025, its permit system has been paperless and fully electronic. Asbestos notices for Merced go to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, or Valley Air District. Its Northern Region Office in Modesto handles Merced County. No demolition permit is issued until the city has the district's signed Demolition Permit Release.
Bring us in as your demolition contractor in Merced for asbestos removal, interior demolition and full structure demolition. We take down whole houses and commercial buildings, and we work best at two to three stories. Anything that needs heavy high-reach equipment goes to our partners. Concrete demolition is part of the work too, and we do a lot of flooring removal. Building homes was our family company's first trade in 1967, and decades of flooring work came next. The work runs under CSLB #247684 and CAL OSHA #507. Our Central Valley work also includes demolition in Turlock. Before we name a price, we see the building in person. The estimate is free, and you can book one at (209) 652-9206.

Every regulated demolition needs a notification to the Valley Air District, with or without asbestos in the building. To the district, a demolition means removing a load-bearing member of the structure. For Merced County, the paperwork goes to the Northern Region Office in Modesto. The notice goes in 10 working days before regulated asbestos abatement starts. With no regulated asbestos to abate, the demolition itself still waits 10 working days from the notice. Once its rules are met, the district signs the Demolition Permit Release, or signs it to certify an exempt job. The release has to reach the city before a demolition permit can be issued.
Inside the district, a Cal/OSHA Certified Asbestos Consultant does the asbestos survey and writes up a report. A state-certified asbestos abatement contractor must finish all regulated asbestos abatement before the demolition starts. That means the consultant does the sampling, and we do the removal. Once asbestos work reaches 100 square feet, Cal/OSHA registration is required. With the report in hand, our asbestos removal in Merced takes out the regulated material before the teardown.
The first Merced post office opened in 1870. In 1875, the Merced County Courthouse went up, and today it houses the County Courthouse Museum. The city incorporated on April 1, 1889. In 2005, Merced became home to UC Merced, the 10th University of California campus.
A typical Merced home dates to 1985, the median year built by Census estimates. The biggest building decade was the 2000s, with about 6,090 homes, or 20 percent. The 1970s added about 5,000, or 17 percent. Even so, more than two in five homes predate 1980. Nearly one in five predate 1960, and about one in 20 dates to 1939 or earlier. In an older house, we account for asbestos-era materials before any machine touches the structure. That is how residential demolition in Merced starts on homes of that age.
Merced's economy has traditionally relied on agribusiness and on Castle Air Force Base. The base phased down over three years and closed in September 1995. More varied industry has come to the area too, including printing, fiberglass boat building, warehousing and distribution, and packaging. On the city's top-employer list, the County of Merced ranks first, ahead of UC Merced. When an office, storefront or plant changes hands, the next tenant may want a bare space to build in. Our interior demolition in Merced gets it there. Tenant improvement demolition and interior strip-outs take the old build-out back to the shell.
Old slabs, footings and flatwork come out with concrete demolition. On plant and warehouse floors, flooring removal and surface preparation takes up the old covering and readies the slab. Our hydro blasting then lifts old adhesive and epoxy at 40,000 psi, with full HEPA vacuum recovery. For commercial demolition in Merced, whole buildings two to three stories tall are our sweet spot. Heavy high-reach jobs go to our partners.
Merced permits run through the Inspection Services Division's online system. You apply, upload plans, pay fees and schedule inspections there. A contractor needs a City of Merced business license in place before applying for a permit. The 2025 California building codes apply to submittals made on or after January 1, 2026. Inside city limits, the city's own Refuse Division collects all solid waste. Its service includes construction and demolition disposal.
Construction and demolition waste in Merced follows CALGreen. That calls for a Construction Waste Management Plan that diverts 65 percent of the waste. A self-certification diversion log from the city goes in with the construction and demolition permit. Non-friable asbestos waste counts as a special waste at the Merced County Regional Waste Management Authority's Highway 59 Landfill. It is taken only wetted and burrito wrapped, by appointment and with prior approval. The recycling plan does not replace the asbestos steps, so regulated abatement still comes first.
